No Blokes Day

With the COVID restrictions preventing attendance at Flemington there will be a lot more guys with their nose to the grindstone on Thursday. And a good thing too. We can’t have any more of this frivolous partying when there is work to be done.

Lloyd Williams showed that the closure of Macedon lodge was absolutely no impediment to winning his seventh Melbourne Cup and his decision to team up with Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien has been a winning move.

Kind of obvious in hindsight and can’t believe that the horse started at 27-1 but most of Mr William’s Cup winners have stared at double figure odds. Consider this, over a thirty- year period he has won 17% of Melbourne Cups runners.  If you’d back just two his winners you’d be streets ahead.

Some quite good horses from Sydney today. They are not here for a holiday but horses trained in Sydney don’t often win the VRC Oaks.

Back the Story, Johnny.

It was difficult keeping it together on Saturday afternoon at Flemington as former AFL Premiership Coach and current Real Estate Agent and hobby trainer and owner Denis Pagan took out the VRC Derby on Saturday with the superbly

Denis Pagan Lachie King and Johnny Get angry after the VRC Derby

named Johnny Get Angry, ridden by Lachie King. He is a total winner.  The two premierships testify to this but for my money what I admired  him most was the poise he showed in managing the train wreck that was the Carlton side he was handed in the early part of this century.

He won the night premiership with a team that had a lot of problems to put it nicely.

On Tuesday the story Might just be Chris Waller and Verry Elegant to follow in the footsteps of Let’s Elope  who won the Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne over the course of about month for Dennis Marks Bart Cummings and Lachie King’s dad Steven.

Theme Bet

Out theme bet for Cup Day is Money Race 1 Finance Tycoon (2) Race 4 Eureka Street (11) Race 7 Twilight Payment (6) Race 8 Harbour Views (8) & Race 10 Excess Funds (11). Stand in the queue of a dividend for a dividend $380,107 if all these horses get over the line in a super Yankee or Parlay Formula 23 4 & 5 bet costing $13.00) which should be enough to ride out any economic damage caused by the pandemic.

The Cauldron?

WS Cox Plate-what is a cauldron and will it apply on Saturday ?

One of the most exciting days on the Australian Racing Calendar is the WS Cox Plate.  William Samuel Cox after operating Kensington race-course for a number of years purchased land at Moonee Valley and opened his new race course there in 1883.

Another example of a cauldron

Under Lockdown rules it will be run in a most un cauldron like  atmosphere.

There have been some great Cox Plates run over the years. My personal favourite is Superimpose’s win after the favourite Naturalism lost the rider and Let’s Elope lost second place on protest to Kinjite. I loved Brian Martin’s call of the race.

The bookies are letting you on with Russian Camelot who 4.60 and a wide draw has a 21% chance of wining. The Caulfield Stakes has proved to be something of a grave yard for the Cox Plate with only 10 horses completing that double over the past 98 years and those 10 were quite special.

Is Arcadia Queen up to the task. Once again, the bookies are letting you on.

Glamour Tips would be recommending a dutching  strategy bearing in mind that Fierce Impact a horse that beat Russian Camelot is at 34-1. Anything could happen!

Theme Bet

Our theme bet this week is Ancient Greek British and Roman Mythology and associated concepts

Race 1 The Centaurian (4)  Race 2 Son of Mercury (7)  Race 5 Fidelia (6) Race 7  Streets of Avalon (9) Race 8 Levendi (6) & Race 9 Russian Camelot (11)

Put these horses into what our English cousins call a Heinz (Parlay 2345 &6) and if all of them win you would in theory be entitled to a dividend of $1,706,373 (about one million seven hundred and six thousand, three hundred and seventy three  dollars).

However, there would be a problem because there would n’t be enough money in the pool to pay you and you would also run into the seldom used maximum win limits that are in the fine print of most betting outlets.
