A Rare Find
At about the 1600 metre mark of the Doomben Cup as I was ripping up my tickets on Sir Dragonet and Mugatoo, I saw something that I have only seen on a race -course twice before. The first was Might and Power’s win in the Caulfield Cup and the other occasion was Winx’s second Cox plate. Race horses just don’t demolish weight for age fields containing Cox Plate and All Star Mile winners and placegetters by seven lengths like Zaaki did last Saturday.
I was a doubter, mediocre form in Great Britain an unlucky 6th in the Doncaster and a second in the JRA plate followed by beating Fifty Stars in the Hollindale for my money didn’t justify the price of 2.25 on offer. I felt heartened when good judge Peter Moody potted the horse but was very much on my own in the last 400 metres. I got it wrong big time and had that sinking feeling when backing yourself doesn’t quite work out.
The Doomben Cup is a good horse’s race. Zaaki is a serious contender for the big races in Melbourne and Sydney in the coming Spring.
It is an important principle in racing to back the story. The big story this weekend is whether Explosive Jack can make history and win four (4) Derby’s. I am putting my money where my mouth is and saying he can. Go Jack!
