The Duet
Toby has egg on his face this week after potting Russian Camelot in the Underwood Stakes on Saturday and won’t be doing that again this Spring.
Is he the new Northerly? He had a weight advantage over the second horse but there was a lot to like about the way he tracked into the race to beat a field of good horses. Has he franked Fierce Impact’s win in the Makybe Diva Stakes? I don’t know and it will be interesting to see what happens when the two meet again. Fierce Impact is favourite for the Hill Stakes on Saturday at Randwick.
Russian Camelot has created a problem. It will be difficult to get a good price for him in any race he starts in so there is little value in betting on him and it might be silly to bet against him. He started at 1.55 and the quaddie paid a paltry $169. Most punters would have barely got there money back. Spend $100 to get it and you are getting odds of 1.69.
A better option may have been Humidor, a Group 1 horse who likes Caulfield in the place quinella and duet markets. Humidor paid 2.80 for the place, a quinella with Russian Camelot paid 8.60 with the duet paying 3.30. All quite attractive prices for what in hindsight was a reasonably predictable outcome.
The quinella and duet are not very popular featuring at the bottom of punter’s preferences, the favourite bet being the high-risk quadrella. Over $2 million dollars was put into the quadrella pool on Saturday. In contrast the duet pool for the Underwood stakes was $6000 and struggles to get over the $1000 mark in other races.
Its different in the Horse Racing Gambling Mecca Hong Kong. Last Sunday in the ten races $90 million dollars was wagered on the duet and the same on the Quinella.
